Founded by the Atchison, Topeka, and Santa Fe Railway in 1911, Slaton became a thriving railroad and cotton producing town. AT one point in the early 1900s, Slaton was an important location for the Santa Fe Railway system, and many of the company's employees and their families. Today, the Slaton community has a number of unique historical attractions related to its heyday.
Slaton is also just 15 miles from Lubbock, Texas, birthplace of Buddy Holly and home to the Texas Tech Red Raiders. The Slaton and Lubbock area is also known for its award-winning wineries, including Llano Estacado Winery, Pheasant Ridge Winery, and and McPherson Cellars.
